Attention to when building the second level
When it comes to adding a second storey, you will have to deal with the block size you already have, which means you will need to speak with your local council to confirm what regulations apply in your area and what other design rules will need to be adhered to.
These design rules could cover things such as overall height of the second storey, or heritage overlays or guidelines that protect neighbourhood character.
“Given the potential impact of the height of two-storey houses, sloping sites may be considered by some people to be better options because the house can be stepped to suit the block,” noted Housing Industry Association senior executive director Kristin Brookfield.
