Basic Tips for Protecting Chickens from Predators

Train your birds to return to the chook residence each night – and make sure to shut it up. If you boost your chicks in that coop, they will naturally return to lay eggs and roost at night time when you allow them to variety for the day. Make sure the house is varmint-proof and that you close it up at night as soon as the birds have settled.
Raise the chicken coop off the floor by means of a foot or with the intention to discourage rats, skunks and snakes from taking up residence under it and stealing eggs, chicks or younger hens. Be positive to maintain the henhouse floor tight and patch any holes that snakes and rats can get via.

Enclose the coop in a cozy fowl run to deter dogs, coyotes, bobcats and other four-legged carnivores from getting access to your flock. You can select fowl twine, welded-cord mesh, electric powered netting or different fencing materials with small enough openings (or sufficiently excessive-voltage electrical pulses) to preserve your birds in and predators out. Bobcats and coyotes are notable jumpers and might effortlessly clean four-foot-high fences, so construct your enclosure accurately tall, or add a cowl net to hold the varmints from vaulting the fence.
Cover the chook run with welded-wire fencing, bird cord or game-chook netting, or install a random array of crisscrossing wires overhead to discourage hawks and owls from making a buffet out of your birds. If you close your chickens inside the coop at night, owl assaults will now not be an trouble. But hungry owls are cagey and may take hold of their meal proper at dusk, or barely in advance, so if owls are a problem in your region, don’t wait until after dark to shut up the coop.

Choose small-mesh fencing substances for enclosing coops and runs whilst raccoons and contributors of the mink or fisher own family are a number of the predators. Raccoons and different fairly dexterous animals are notorious for achieving via larger meshed fencing or chicken twine and killing the chickens they could snag. This is
mainly essential whilst you keep your chickens in a totally enclosed twine coop/run, which includes various fowl tractor (portable coops without a floor) designs. Although 2-by-3-inch welded-cord fencing is much less pricey, you may lose fewer birds in case you use 1-via-2-inch mesh or smaller welded cord.
Bury galvanized hardware cloth or other welded-twine fencing across the perimeter of the chook run if you have issues with predators digging under your floor fencing.

Provide a night time light (motion-sensor-activated) on the way to flood the bird run with mild after darkish or set up a set of Nite Guard Solar predator-deterrent lighting (see advertisement interior front cover). This will keep maximum nocturnal predators far from the coop.
Give your hen-friendly puppies the run of the chicken
backyard – specially at night. Be sure your puppies aren’t tempted to chase jogging, squawking chickens if you pick out not to shut up the coop at night time or pick to depart the dogs inside the hen backyard at some point of the day.
Prepare your self to take speedy movement when you find out predation. You can take measures to do away with the predator or to cast off its get admission to in your birds. Failure to achieve this will bring about next losses, if the predators think the buffet line is open.
Create a predator-chance sector around the coop and fowl backyard. Most terrestrial predators are uncomfortable crossing an area with minimal cover. Go in advance and plant trees inside the hen run – your birds will love the coloration and nibbling on the leaves – but depart the perimeter as cowl-loose as you could. Raccoons are less probable to try to work their “palms” right into a welded-cord enclosure once they must take a seat inside the open to do it.
