How Long It Takes Snake Gourd to Germinate

These writhing, snakelike gourds grasp from the trellis, waiting for harvest. Grown as an annual, the snake gourd (Trichosanthes cucumerina var. Anguina) is local to India. This uncommon gourd is harvested, cooked and eaten at the same time as the fruit remains immature. A member of the pumpkin family (Cucurbitaceae), the snake gourd grows fast as soon as its difficult-shelled seeds germinate.

Cracking the Seeds
The outer shells of the snake gourd’s seeds are strangely difficult, making them tough to germinate. Even under best conditions, the seeds might also require a month to germinate, and up to forty percent of the seeds fail to sprout. To growth the germination rate, cautiously crack the difficult shell with pliers, similar to you’ll crack open an almond shell — vicinity the pliers’ jaws on the ridged seam that joins the seed’s two halves and press lightly until it cracks open. Do this carefully, due to the fact if you weigh down the shell and harm the endosperm interior, the seeds might not sprout.

Soaking the Seeds
After breaking the seam that holds the shell together, soaking the seeds for 2 to 12 hours facilitates prompt the germination procedure. Simply location the cracked seeds right into a bowl of warm water and area it on top of the refrigerator or in another heat location. After soaking the seeds, plant them in a wet seed-starting mix in big flowerpots or peat pots. Cover the pots with plastic wrap to keep the moisture in. When the sprouts seem, typically within 10 days, dispose of the plastic wrap.
