🔒 What is WhatsApp Restricted Chat?

WhatsApp has started rolling out a new privacy feature called Restricted Chat, giving users more control over how specific conversations can be accessed and used.

The feature is currently being rolled out gradually to selected beta testers on Android and iOS. WhatsApp has not yet announced when Restricted Chat will become available to everyone on the stable version.

Restricted Chat is an upgraded version of the earlier Advanced Chat Privacy feature, with an important new restriction: selected conversations can now be limited to the user’s primary phone.

Once a conversation is restricted, it is no longer available on linked devices. This is designed to reduce access through unofficial clients and AI agents that may rely on linked-device connections.

⚙️ How to Enable Restricted Chat on WhatsApp

If the feature is available on your beta version, you can reportedly enable it from the chat information screen:

Open WhatsApp.
Open the individual conversation you want to restrict.
Open the Chat Info screen.
Look for Restricted Chat.
Enable the option.

Since the feature is still being rolled out gradually, the option may not appear even if you are using a compatible beta version. Some users may still see the older Advanced Chat Privacy option instead.

As of October 5, 2026, Restricted Chat is being gradually rolled out to selected beta testers.
