My Home Tour
Here at Design*Sponge, we’ve covered a extensive spectrum of topics, from DIY how-to’s, to artist profiles and studios, to recipes, to pop culture subjects and essays that run the gamut in situation depend. But over time, our primary focus has continually been home excursions. They’re our bread and butter. They’re our window to the world, and after publishing, reading and enhancing lots of them, we nonetheless can’t get sufficient of them.
Year after 12 months, readers entrust us with showcasing their houses — an intimate take a look at their existence — and it’s something we don’t take gently. We honor this believe by way of dealing with the home tours of others the manner we’d want a person to tell the memories of our own homes, and we work to get the information just proper — “What private pronouns might you choose we use?” and “Are you cozy which includes the names of your kids?” and “Are there methods we should higher and extra respectfully describe those cultural circle of relatives heirlooms?” — because those information all paintings together to tell the tale of you. After all is said and achieved, the greater communication isn’t always about design, it’s about life at domestic.

Our very first home tour posted in 2007 — a small, one-photograph peek within the Portland home of artist Amy Ruppel — and it was written by Grace. She tells me, “I didn’t have any idea that people could want to peer more content material like this (at the time I mainly wrote approximately new product designs) and so I called it a ‘sneak peek’ because it felt like we in short stepped inside Amy’s entryway, snapped a picture, and then ran out!”
“Over the beyond 11 years of strolling weekly home tours,” Grace keeps, “we’ve featured almost 2,000 interiors and we’ve long past from going for walks commonly submissions to spending the bulk of our time achieving out directly to people from a huge range of backgrounds and styles. I was the first and only domestic excursion creator for years, after which we improved to a small freelance crew of three writers, then to 2 full-time writers (Amy and Max!) and now we’re a group of 7 freelance writers unfold internationally from Finland to California.”
As a part of my Managing Editor duties entails modifying all of our content material (and writing home tours myself), I’ve had my fingers on almost every unmarried domestic tour that’s posted in the final 4+ years (other than after I took brief breaks to provide beginning to my daughters); and before that, I became a hardcore D*S fangirl. I recognise our manner just like the lower back of my hand — a manner that frequently takes 3-4 months consistent with domestic tour — and with input from our gifted crew, today we’re going to drag again the curtain for you on The Anatomy of a Home Tour.
