Marble is a metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, maximum typically calcite or dolomite. Marble is usually not foliated, even though there are exceptions. In geology, the time period marble refers to metamorphosed limestone, but its use in stonemasonry more widely encompasses unmetamorphosed limestone. Marble is typically used for sculpture and as a building material.
The word “marble” derives from the Ancient Greek μάρμαρον (mármaron), from μάρμαρος (mármaros), “crystalline rock, shining stone”, perhaps from the verb μαρμαίρω (marmaírō), “to flash, sparkle, gleam”; R. S. P. Beekes has recommended that a “Pre-Greek starting place is probable”.
This stem is also the ancestor of the English phrase “marmoreal”, that means “marble-like.”[citation needed] While the English time period “marble” resembles the French marbre, maximum different European languages (with phrases like “marmoreal”) extra carefully resemble the unique Ancient Greek.[citation needed]

Marble is a rock because of metamorphism of sedimentary carbonate rocks, maximum generally limestone or dolomite rock. Metamorphism causes variable recrystallization of the unique carbonate mineral grains. The resulting marble rock is commonly composed of an interlocking mosaic of carbonate crystals. Primary sedimentary textures and systems of the unique carbonate rock (protolith) have commonly been modified or destroyed.
