Development of the Recyclable Tube

Most toothpaste tubes are made from sheets of plastic laminate – normally a combination of various plastics – often sandwiched around a skinny layer of aluminum that protects the toothpaste’s taste and fluoride. The mix of substances is pressed together right into a unmarried film, making it impossible to recycle via conventional techniques.

To make a recyclable tube, Colgate selected high-density polyethylene (HDPE), the broadly recycled “No. 2” plastic popular for bottle making. But due to the fact HDPE is inflexible, it isn’t properly acceptable for ultra-thin laminate sheets and smooth, squeezable tubes.
