How to Build a Rainwater Collection System

2.Get additional substances to turn the barrels right into a water collection machine. The components you may need to make your rainwater series gadget can effortlessly be picked up at a hardware or domestic and lawn keep. Figure out what you already have accessible, then accumulate the subsequent substances:
1 standard 1-inch hose spigot with ¾-in. Pipe threads, so that you can get admission to water out of your rain barrel.
1 ¾-inch x ¾-inch coupling
1 ¾-inch x ¾-inch bushing
1 ¾-inch pipe thread with a 1-inch hose adapter
1 ¾-inch lock nut
four metallic washers
1 roll Teflon thread tape
1 tube silicon caulk
1 “S”-formed aluminum downspout elbow, to direct water from your downspout in your rain barrel
1 piece of aluminum window display, to hold leaves, bugs and other substances from your water
4-6 concrete blocks

3.Level a place right subsequent to your downspout. The downspout is the steel or plastic tube walking from your roof’s gutters to the ground. You’re going to reroute the downspout directly into your rain barrel, so that you’ll want to put together a platform within the region right next to it. Clear away any rocks and other debris from the vicinity. If the ground there isn’t flat, take a shovel and clean away enough dust to flatten an area large enough to deal with the number of barrels you’ve got.[1]
If your downspout empties out onto a concrete driveway or patio it is situated on a hill, construct a stage surface by means of stacking a few plywood boards inside the low section so that you’ve got a degree area on which to set the barrels.
If you have a couple of downspout on your own home, select to vicinity the barrels close to the one it really is closest in your garden, so the water you acquire won’t have as far to journey while it is time to use it.

4.Create a layer of pea gravel. This will offer better drainage around the rain barrels and help preserve water faraway from the foundation of your private home. Dig a 5-inch deep rectangle inside the place you leveled to house the rain barrels, and fill it with 1⁄2 inch (1.3 cm) of pea gravel.
Skip this in case your downspout empties onto a concrete driveway or patio.

5.Stack concrete blocks on pinnacle of the pea gravel. Stack them sideways to create a raised platform for the rain barrel or barrels. The finished platform should be extensive and lengthy enough to preserve all your rain barrels degree with each other, and consistent sufficient that they might not tip over.

6.Drill a spigot hollow inside the facet of your barrel. It ought to be high sufficient up on the barrel to in shape a bucket or water jug under. Make a 3/4-inch hollow to correctly match the spigot you purchased.
This is the same old size for a spigot; in case you’re the use of a exceptional sized-spigot, make certain you drill the right sized hole in order that it fits into the facet of the barrel.

7.Squeeze a circle of caulk around the hollow. Put caulk on each the interior and the outdoor of the barrel.

8.Attach the spigot. Put the spigot and the coupling collectively. Use Teflon tape to wrap the threaded ends to create a good seal and save you leakage. Put a washer on the threaded quit of the coupling and insert it through the hollow in the barrel from the outside. Slip any other washing machine over the pipe from the internal. Attach the bushing to maintain the spigot in area.
Follow the directions for attaching the kind of spigot you’ve got. You may additionally need to attach it in a different way than distinctive here.

9.Make an overflow valve. Drill a 2d hole some inches from the top of the barrel. It have to be 3⁄4 inch (1.Nine cm), or the equal length because the first hole you drilled. Squeeze a circle of caulk around the hole, each outside and inside the barrel. Slip a washing machine on the hose adapter and positioned it thru the hollow from the outdoor. Put another washing machine at the internal threads, connect a few Teflon tape, and fasten a nut to tighten the meeting. You can connect a garden hose immediately to the valve.
If you have a 2nd barrel to use as an overflow barrel, you may want to drill a third maintain inside the first barrel. Drill it on the equal degree because the spigot several inches to the facet. Then drill a three⁄four inch (1.9 cm)-hollow inside the 2d barrel at the same level because the hollow you just drilled in the first one. Attach hose adapters to the holes in both barrels as defined above.
If you are the use of a third overflow barrel, the second barrel will need a 2d hole so that you can join it to the third barrel. Make a 2nd valve on the other side of the barrel at the identical degree. Make a valve in the 1/3 barrel as well.

10.Connect the downspout elbow to the downspout. Figure out wherein to connect it by means of setting the barrel at the platform subsequent to the downspout. It ought to be near sufficient to the downspout that you can join it with the downspout elbow. Mark the downspout one inch below the peak of the rain barrel. You’ll want to attach the downspout elbow to the downspout so water will pour directly into the barrel. Use a hacksaw to reduce the downspout on the mark. Fit the elbow to the downspout. Fasten it in region with screws, and make certain they’re tight.
As your measuring and becoming the elbow to the downspout, ensure that the give up of the elbow will dip properly into the barrel so all of the water gets accrued there. You do not need the water to be pouring into the barrel from above.

11.Connect the barrel to the elbow. If the barrel has a lid, use the hacksaw to cut a hollow big sufficient for the stop of the elbow to suit internal. Cover the region across the hollow with the steel display.

12.Place a filter on the pinnacle of the downspout. This will save you leaves and other debris from strolling down the downspout and developing a clog to your rainwater collection gadget.

13.Connect the extra barrels. If you’ve got more barrels, set them at the platform and join lengths of hose to the valves.
