Frustrated with the Bay Area’s absurdly luxurious housing market, Siena Shaw and her husband, Brian Rubin, spent the beyond two years parenting and operating full-time jobs — and building the Mighty House.
The couple and their then-2-12 months-vintage daughter had relocated from New York and were dwelling with Shaw’s parents in Menlo Park.
“We didn’t recognise in which we were going to stay and couldn’t parent that out right away because of housing fees,” she said. “We were like, ‘There needs to be a higher option to this.’”

Their ardour for constructing sustainable structures blended with a desire to get out of her parents’ residence, Shaw said, resulted inside the Mighty House, a 250-rectangular-foot tiny home on wheels. The Mighty House sits on an eight-through-24-foot trailer and has a sitting location, kitchen with refrigerator, range and oven, a lavatory with a shower and lavatory, plus a lofted place for a mattress.
