Nalukettu approach 4 blocks and a normal house constructed in this style could be divided into a north, south, east, and west block.
The naalukettu became a typical function of the Kerala tharavadu culture, wherein joint families lived collectively for generations with a patriarch and matriarch overseeing all their affairs. At the centre of the residence is a nadumuttam, which is an open courtyard that served as the focal point of interactions among the circle of relatives as well as various household sports and festivities. The large and wealthier households had ettukettu or, the rarer, pathinaarukettu houses featured eight and 16 blocks with two and 4 courtyards respectively.
