The first documented ancestors of the Persian had been imported from Khorasan, Iran, into Italy in 1620 by using Pietro della Valle, and from Angora (now Ankara), Ottoman Empire (Turkey), into France by way of Nicholas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc at around the identical time. The Khorasan cats have been gray lined while the ones from Angora have been white. From France, they quickly reached Britain.

Recent genetic studies shows that current Persians are associated no longer to cats from the Near East however to cats from Western Europe. The researchers stated, “Even even though the early Persian cat might also have in fact originated from Persia (Iran), the modern Persian cat has misplaced its phylogeographical signature.”

The first Persian cat turned into offered at the first prepared cat display, in 1871 in the Crystal Palace in London, England, organized via Harrison Weir. As specimens towards the later set up Persian conformation have become the extra famous kinds, attempts had been made to distinguish it from the Angora. The first breed popular (then referred to as a factors of excellence listing) changed into issued in 1889 by using cat display promoter Weir. He stated that the Persian differed from the Angora inside the tail being longer, hair greater complete and coarse on the give up and head larger, with less pointed ears. Not all cat fanciers agreed with the distinction of the 2 kinds, and in the 1903 work The Book of the Cat, Francis Simpson states that “the differences, seemingly with hardly any distinction, between Angoras and Persians are of so excellent a nature that I need to be pardoned if I ignore the class of cat typically referred to as Angora”.

Dorothy Bevill Champion lays out the distinction among the 2 kinds within the 1909 Everybody’s Cat Book:

Our pedigree imported lengthy-hairs of to-day are absolutely a go of the Angora and Persian; the latter possesses a rounder head than the previous, also the coat is of quite a specific excellent.

Bell is going on to detail the variations. Persian coats consist of a woolly beneath coat and an extended, hairy outer coat. The coat loses all of the thick underwool in the summer season, and best the long hair remains. Hair at the shoulders and upper a part of the hind legs is particularly shorter. Conversely, the Angora has a very specific coat which consists of long, soft hair, hanging in locks, “inclining to a moderate curl or wave at the beneath components of the frame.” The Angora’s hair is a lot longer at the shoulders and hind legs than the Persian, which Bell considered a extraordinary development. However, Bell says the Angora “fails to the Persian in head,” Angoras having a greater wedge-fashioned head and Persians having a rounder head.

Bell notes that Angoras and Persians had been crossbred, resulting in a decided development to each breed, however claimed the lengthy-haired cat of 1909 had extensively greater Persian affect than Angora.

Champion lamented the dearth of difference amongst various lengthy-haired kinds through English fanciers, who in 1887, decided to group them below the umbrella term “Long-haired Cats”.
