Throughout records, primitive peoples have made use of caves. The earliest human fossils found in caves come from a chain of caves close to Krugersdorp and Mokopane in South Africa. The cave web sites of Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, Kromdraai B, Drimolen, Malapa, Cooper’s D, Gladysvale, Gondolin and Makapansgat have yielded a variety of early human species relationship lower back to between 3 and 1,000,000 years in the past, inclusive of Australopithecus africanus, 7Australopithecus sediba and Paranthropus robustus. However, it isn’t commonly concept that those early people have been residing inside the caves, but that they were added into the caves with the aid of carnivores that had killed them.[citation needed]

The first early hominid ever located in Africa, the Taung Child in 1924, was also thought for decades to come from a cave, in which it were deposited after being preyed upon by means of an eagle. However, that is now debated. Caves do shape inside the dolomite of the Ghaap Plateau, such as the Early, Middle and Later Stone Age web site of Wonderwerk Cave; however, the caves that form alongside the escarpment’s facet, like that hypothesised for the Taung Child, are fashioned within a secondary limestone deposit called tufa. There is severa proof for different early human species inhabiting caves from at least one million years in the past in one of a kind parts of the arena, such as Homo erectus in China at Zhoukoudian, Homo rhodesiensis in South Africa on the Cave of Hearths (Makapansgat), Homo neandertalensis and Homo heidelbergensis in Europe at Archaeological Site of Atapuerca, Homo floresiensis in Indonesia, and the Denisovans in southern Siberia.

In southern Africa, early present day human beings frequently used sea caves as safe haven starting about one hundred eighty,000 years ago when they found out to make the most the ocean for the first time. The oldest acknowledged website online is PP13B at Pinnacle Point. This can also have allowed rapid expansion of people out of Africa and colonization of regions of the sector such as Australia via 60–50,000 years ago. Throughout southern Africa, Australia, and Europe, early cutting-edge human beings used caves and rock shelters as web sites for rock artwork, which includes the ones at Giants Castle. Caves which includes the yaodong in China had been used for refuge; other caves had been used for burials (inclusive of rock-reduce tombs), or as religious websites (which includes Buddhist caves). Among the recognised sacred caves are China’s Cave of a Thousand Buddhas and the sacred caves of Crete.

As era improved, humans and different hominids started building their very own dwellings. Buildings including huts and longhouses were used for living since the overdue Neolithic.
