Throughout records, primitive peoples have made use of caves. The earliest human fossils located in caves come from a chain of caves near Krugersdorp and Mokopane in South Africa. The cave websites of Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, Kromdraai B, Drimolen, Malapa, Cooper’s D, Gladysvale, Gondolin and Makapansgat have yielded more than a few early human species courting lower back to between three and a million years in the past, along with Australopithecus africanus, 7Australopithecus sediba and Paranthropus robustus. However, it isn’t always usually idea that those early human beings had been living within the caves, but that they had been introduced into the caves by way of carnivores that had killed them.[citation needed]

The first early hominid ever discovered in Africa, the Taung Child in 1924, turned into also thought for many years to return from a cave, wherein it have been deposited after being preyed upon with the aid of an eagle. However, this is now debated. Caves do shape in the dolomite of the Ghaap Plateau, consisting of the Early, Middle and Later Stone Age web site of Wonderwerk Cave; but, the caves that form along the escarpment’s side, like that hypothesised for the Taung Child, are shaped within a secondary limestone deposit referred to as tufa. There is severa proof for other early human species inhabiting caves from at least 1,000,000 years in the past in specific parts of the arena, including Homo erectus in China at Zhoukoudian, Homo rhodesiensis in South Africa on the Cave of Hearths (Makapansgat), Homo neandertalensis and Homo heidelbergensis in Europe at Archaeological Site of Atapuerca, Homo floresiensis in Indonesia, and the Denisovans in southern Siberia.

In southern Africa, early modern-day humans often used sea caves as safe haven beginning about a hundred and eighty,000 years ago after they learned to take advantage of the ocean for the primary time. The oldest acknowledged web site is PP13B at Pinnacle Point. This may also have allowed fast enlargement of humans out of Africa and colonization of regions of the arena inclusive of Australia by 60–50,000 years in the past. Throughout southern Africa, Australia, and Europe, early present day people used caves and rock shelters as sites for rock art, which include the ones at Giants Castle. Caves such as the yaodong in China had been used for safe haven; different caves were used for burials (inclusive of rock-cut tombs), or as non secular websites (which includes Buddhist caves). Among the recognised sacred caves are China’s Cave of a Thousand Buddhas and the sacred caves of Crete.

As generation advanced, people and other hominids commenced constructing their very own dwellings. Buildings which includes huts and longhouses had been used for dwelling since the late Neolithic
