Throughout records, primitive peoples have made use of caves. The earliest human fossils observed in caves come from a sequence of caves close to Krugersdorp and Mokopane in South Africa. The cave web sites of Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, Kromdraai B, Drimolen, Malapa, Cooper’s D, Gladysvale, Gondolin and Makapansgat have yielded various early human species relationship again to among three and one million years ago, together with Australopithecus africanus, 7Australopithecus sediba and Paranthropus robustus. However, it isn’t generally idea that those early human beings have been dwelling inside the caves, however that they have been introduced into the caves via carnivores that had killed them.[citation needed]

The first early hominid ever determined in Africa, the Taung Child in 1924, become also thought for decades to come from a cave, wherein it have been deposited after being preyed upon by way of an eagle. However, this is now debated. Caves do shape within the dolomite of the Ghaap Plateau, including the Early, Middle and Later Stone Age web page of Wonderwerk Cave; but, the caves that form along the escarpment’s side, like that hypothesised for the Taung Child, are shaped inside a secondary limestone deposit referred to as tufa. There is severa evidence for other early human species inhabiting caves from as a minimum 1,000,000 years ago in one-of-a-kind elements of the sector, which includes Homo erectus in China at Zhoukoudian, Homo rhodesiensis in South Africa at the Cave of Hearths (Makapansgat), Homo neandertalensis and Homo heidelbergensis in Europe at Archaeological Site of Atapuerca, Homo floresiensis in Indonesia, and the Denisovans in southern Siberia.

In southern Africa, early modern-day people regularly used sea caves as shelter starting approximately 180,000 years in the past once they found out to exploit the sea for the primary time. The oldest recognized website is PP13B at Pinnacle Point. This may also have allowed speedy growth of human beings out of Africa and colonization of regions of the world inclusive of Australia by 60–50,000 years ago. Throughout southern Africa, Australia, and Europe, early cutting-edge human beings used caves and rock shelters as websites for rock art, consisting of those at Giants Castle. Caves together with the yaodong in China were used for refuge; other caves have been used for burials (such as rock-reduce tombs), or as non secular sites (inclusive of Buddhist caves). Among the recognized sacred caves are China’s Cave of a Thousand Buddhas and the sacred caves of Crete.

As era progressed, human beings and different hominids commenced constructing their own dwellings. Buildings consisting of huts and longhouses had been used for dwelling since the late Neolithic.
