Throughout records, primitive peoples have made use of caves. The earliest human fossils determined in caves come from a sequence of caves close to Krugersdorp and Mokopane in South Africa. The cave web sites of Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, Kromdraai B, Drimolen, Malapa, Cooper’s D, Gladysvale, Gondolin and Makapansgat have yielded a number early human species dating returned to among 3 and one million years in the past, together with Australopithecus africanus, 7Australopithecus sediba and Paranthropus robustus. However, it isn’t always commonly thought that those early humans were living inside the caves, but that they have been delivered into the caves through carnivores that had killed them.[citation needed]

The first early hominid ever found in Africa, the Taung Child in 1924, become also concept for decades to come back from a cave, wherein it were deposited after being preyed upon by way of an eagle. However, that is now debated.Caves do form in the dolomite of the Ghaap Plateau, which includes the Early, Middle and Later Stone Age site of Wonderwerk Cave; but, the caves that form along the escarpment’s side, like that hypothesised for the Taung Child, are formed inside a secondary limestone deposit known as tufa. There is severa proof for other early human species inhabiting caves from at the least a million years in the past in extraordinary elements of the sector, including Homo erectus in China at Zhoukoudian, Homo rhodesiensis in South Africa on the Cave of Hearths (Makapansgat), Homo neandertalensis and Homo heidelbergensis in Europe at Archaeological Site of Atapuerca, Homo floresiensis in Indonesia, and the Denisovans in southern Siberia.

In southern Africa, early current humans frequently used sea caves as safe haven starting approximately 180,000 years ago when they discovered to exploit the ocean for the primary time.[3] The oldest known web site is PP13B at Pinnacle Point. This can also have allowed rapid expansion of human beings out of Africa and colonization of areas of the sector consisting of Australia via 60–50,000 years in the past. Throughout southern Africa, Australia, and Europe, early present day humans used caves and rock shelters as websites for rock art, inclusive of those at Giants Castle. Caves including the yaodong in China have been used for refuge; other caves have been used for burials (along with rock-reduce tombs), or as non secular sites (inclusive of Buddhist caves). Among the known sacred caves are China’s Cave of a Thousand Buddhas[4] and the sacred caves of Crete.
