We need to try this new method.

Four. Tackle climate change
Climate trade has contributed to a upward push in extreme climate events, scientists trust. Earlier this month the chief of the Green Party, Natalie Bennett, welcomed the landmark Paris Agreement, wherein governments from 195 nations pledged to “pursue efforts” to restrict the increase in worldwide average temperatures to at least one.5°C above pre-industrial degrees. “It is now important that world leaders deliver at the promise of Paris,” Ms Bennett said. “The pressure is now at the British authorities to opposite its disastrous environmental coverage-making.”

five. Increase spending on flood defences
Figures produced with the aid of the House of Commons library suggest that actual terms spending on flood defences has fallen by means of 20 consistent with cent considering that David Cameron came to electricity. Yesterday [MON] the Prime Minister rejected this allegation, insisting the amount being spent had risen. Mr Cameron promised to check spending on flood defences after chairing a conference call of the authorities’s emergency Cobra committee at the weekend.

6. Protect wetlands and introduce plant bushes strategically
The advent of extra wetlands – which could act as sponges, absorbing moisture – and wooded regions can sluggish down waters when rivers overflow. These regions are regularly destroyed to make room for agriculture and improvement, the WWF stated. Halting deforestation and wetland drainage, reforesting upstream areas and restoring broken wetlands ought to notably reduce the impact of climate alternate on flooding, in line with the conservation charity.

7. Restore rivers to their herbal publications
Many river channels had been traditionally straightened to improve navigability. Remeandering straightened rivers by introducing their bends another time will increase their duration and may delay the flood flow and decrease the effect of the flooding downstream.

8. Introduce water garage areas
Following the severe flooding of 2009 a £5.6 million flood comfort scheme become mounted in Thacka Beck, at the outskirts of Penrith, Cumbria. More than 675 metres of culverts underneath the streets of Penrith were changed and a 76,000m³ flood storage reservoir – the equal of 30 Olympic sized swimming pools – changed into constructed upstream to keep lower back flood water. The threat of flooding from the beck was reduced from a 20 according to cent danger in any given 12 months to a one per cent risk, according to Cumbria Wildlife Trust.

Nine. Improve soil situations
Inappropriate soil management, equipment and animal hooves can reason soil to grow to be compacted so that as opposed to soaking up moisture, keeping it and slowly letting it move, water runs off it straight away. Well tired soil can absorb huge portions of rainwater, preventing it from strolling into rivers.
