Anything from small pieces of yam to kilos can be made at home.

Research stations like IRAT’ make a unique look at of food vegetation, and propose farmers.
In Liberia, it’s far recognised that the software of potassium (K) fertilizers is valuable in increasing yields.

In Nigeria and Ghana, the agricultural provider advises that yams ought to accept the following fertilizers:

250 kg/ha ammonium sulphate;

65 kg/ha unmarried superphosphate;

215 kg/ha potassium chloride.

The farmer who wants to make development must all of the time ask for recommendation from the rural carrier.

– In many African nations, yams are planted in mounds 30 to 40 centimetres high and 1 or 2 metres aside. These mounds are made at the start of the wet season. The soil which has consequently been properly loosened holds lots of water.

Sometimes the mounds are most effective made 2 or three months after planting. This earthing up encourages the development of tubers but takes a whole lot of work from the farmer.

If the soil in all fairness deep and is deeply tilled, it isn’t continually necessary to make mounds. In that case, more tubers can be planted and the density is more.

Yams are planted at the beginning of the wet season. Plant them 5 to 10 centimetres deep 1 metre aside in all guidelines or 90 centimetres by 1 metre. This offers the tubers masses of room to fatten up, and the plant uses all of the rainy season water.

How to propagate yams
Many types of yam bear flowers which fruit and convey seeds. So it’s far possible to achieve new yam plants by using sowing these seeds.

But this way of propagating is not any use to the farmer. The new plants grown from seed are not continually just like the parent vegetation. Often the yield is less, the tubers are an awful lot too small and of terrible satisfactory and contain a poison known as dioscorine.

For these kinds of motives, it is higher to propagate by using cuttings. But here care is needed Take cuttings from ripe tubers, and not from the aerial stems, as is completed with cassava. These root cuttings make plant life which can be just like the discern plant, and provide proper yields.

For the cuttings use portions of tuber or small entire tubers. To get normal sprouting and good yields, the cuttings “whether or not entire tubers or portions) need to weigh among 250 and 400 grammes.

The amount of yams planted represents a tremendous part (approximately a quarter) of the harvest. That an awful lot of the harvest should be set apart and nicely stored for use in planting later.

Plant handiest absolutely ripe tubers. It is first-class to use the a part of the tuber nearest the crown. This top of the tuber carries many boom buds and shoots extra quickly than the relaxation of the tuber. For this purpose, tops of tubers ought to all be planted within the identical subject.

The final yam tubers are planted in some other discipline. They sprout much less fast.

With the Dioscorea bulbifera variety of yams, the bulbils can be planted within the equal manner as tubers. Wait till they’re pretty ripe, while they may be without problems removed from the stem.

Do now not plant tubers or bulbils that are broken, rotten or diseased.
